Ski Review All-Mountain Ski 2016/2017

Ambitious skiers & intrepid adventurers

It's all in the mix: Enjoying crispy Champagne powder in the morning during some backcountry skiing before having some fun on the slopes in the afternoon? If that's what you're into, all-mountain skis are your first choice!

With medium-width waists these all-rounders are designed for 50/50 versatility all over the mountain and thus meet all requirements possible for both on piste and off piste skiing. This versatility makes the skis a great tool in varying slope conditions: Floating decently like a pro in deep powder while also providing stability and fantastic edge hold in long turns on groomed runs, all-mountain skis are the best choice if you like to venture off piste every now and then. Due to extensive research and refinement of the manufacturing process, these skis feature enough flexibility for powder runs as well as a decent stability for turns on the groomers.

The WorldSkitest 2016/17 was accompanied by the best test conditions possible. While the groomed slopes were quite hardpacked in the morning of the first day, they became increasingly softer throughout the testing days. However, this condition was perfect regarding the promised versatility and quality in softer conditions, which were to be checked.

Target group

All-mountain skis belong to me, because:
  • ... I love hardpacked slopes as much as fresh powder.
  • ... I fancy mogul slopes every now and then.
  • ... I need skis that perform great in all conditions possible.
  • ... days on the slopes rich in variety are just the ticket for me.

Atomic beats Völkl and Elan

In the category all-mountain, the ski tester demanded the maximum of versatility and performance. Fortunately, all of the ski models tested met these requirements.

The Atomic Vantage X 83 were the most convincing skis: With their outstanding performance in high speed, long turns, and groomed piste, they were best rated with a total score of 41,2 and thus awarded being the best skis in this competition.

Völkl RTM 84 is another ski model that gained over the skiers' hearts and won the silver medal with a likewise excellent performance. Next to the both front runner of models, the Elan Amphibio 84 Xti Fusion snatched a place on the podium thanks to its smoothness and responsiveness.

The Olympic gold medallists and top athletes Fritz Strobl and Rainer Schönfelder were among the reviewers, which were delighted by the results of the all-mountain skis. Two of the ski models were even awarded being "excellent“.
