Top-notch cuisine high above the Matter Valley

In January 2015, the English newspaper “The Telegraph” named two Zermatt-based restaurants and one restaurant from Cervinia in the top 10 mountain restaurants worldwide. In addition to the Zermatt establishments “Chez Vrony” and “Zum See”, “Chalet Etoile” on the Italian side in Cervinia also made it onto this illustrious list. You can visit Chez Vrony in the Sunnegga area just off run no. 6. All you have to do is take the Sunnegga Bahn in Zermatt and run no. 6 is already signposted at the mountain station. Chez Vrony is located in at an altitude of 2,130m and offers perfect views of the Matterhorn. It is one of the few restaurants to serve its own organic produce from animals exclusively fed on Alpine grass. One of the restaurant specialities is locally cured meat as well as Alpine cheese made according to a recipe passed down over generations. The Zum See restaurant is located directly next to the run from Furi to Zermatt. Here, fresh ingredients are prepared in the traditional way. Thanks to the sheltered location, the sundeck is well worth a visit, with space for 120 guests. Chalet Etoile is situated directly next to the mountain station of the gondola from Cervinia to Plan Maison.

Restaurant Ferdinand: Our tip for hungry sun worshippers

If you prefer to enjoy the warmer temperatures closer to the valley, it doesn’t mean you have to do without the breath-taking Matterhorn panorama and exclusive cuisine. Restaurant Ferdinand, which was only built in 2014, is located at the end of valley run no. 3 from Sunnegga down to Zermatt. An elevator also makes this restaurant easy to reach from the town. The sundeck offers views of the Matterhorn from its most beautiful side. Ferdinand’s specialities primarily include Swiss dishes such as various types of raclette, fondue and cured meat. Ferdinand is committed to casual Alpine dining and that means enjoying exclusive local cuisine in a laid-back atmosphere with products exclusively sourced in Valais and Switzerland.

For bargain hunters: The self-service restaurant Kulmhotel Gornergrat or a jaunt over to Italy

For guests on a lower budget, we can definitely recommend the panoramic self-service restaurant in the Kulmhotel Gornergrat, located directly next to the final stop on the Gornergrat cog railway. It is even cheaper to eat at one of the numerous mountain restaurants on the Italian side above Breuil-Cervinia or Valtournenche.

Great different mountain restaurants with great flair, disadvantage also here the unmistakably high prices.

On several mountain huts: Staff friendly, nimble and accommodating. The prices a bit high but you know that when you go to Zermatt. I still be every year 2x2 weeks there.
